What is it that successful, effective people do that most ordinary people do not do?

Mark Joyner and Timothy Ferris are the kings of eliminating non-essentials in your life. They both preach the art of doing less and making more money. The concepts these guys teach has changed my life. You can learn to be an effective person as opposed to a busy person.

Ferris outsourced his life and began taking mini retirements at the age of 29. He has been a Chinese kick boxing champ, an Argentine Tango champ and a featured star in an Asian soap opera.

There are 6 keys to making your life less hectic and more effective

I will list them and then elaborate…

1. Say no to doing it all: Using the 80/20 rule you can eliminate most of what you are now doing and actually make a difference.

2. Never multi task: Focus your energy on one task at a time without interruptions. Which leads to the next rule…

3. Limit your hours of availability by phone, email, instant message or text message Limit your use of email to once or twice a day!

4. Outsource as much as you can: Start a little at a time while you find the right people do not make yourself indispensable create a replicatable model for every task.

5. Limit information intake: Throw out the TV, limit news on the radio, rss feeds etc and finish and implement the courses you have bought before you buy another one.
6. Stop living in “The Sea of Should”: Get over the work ethic, stop being frantically busy to prove your worthy, Stop caring what others think of you .

One: The 80/20 rule

20 percent of what you do makes a difference, 20 percent of all your employees or customers supply you with most of your results. The other 80 percent just take waste your time and eat away at your day leaving you tired, frustrated and confused.
By simply assessing which 20 percent of your life is bringing you results and eliminating the rest you can have a higher quality existence. Timothy Ferriss recommends doing this with all aspects of your life from business to dating.
It sounds a little harsh at first but if you keep trying to do it all you are heading for a collapse. We all are. It isn’t a question of if you are going to simplify but when. Will you do it voluntarily or will you wait till it all just builds up to the point of craziness and you become ill from the stress?
Tim Ferriss has a great exercise in his book the 4 Hour Workweek where you simply practice saying No to everything everyone asks you to do for a day.

Two: Never multi-task

You actually get more confused and get less done by trying to do it all at once. If you keep stopping to answer the phone or check emails you have to refocus too many times. Four simple words that can change your life TURN THE PHONE OFF.
You can do many things in life but you can’t do them all at the same time. By blocking out uninterrupted time and finishing each module of a project in one sitting you will have less reorientation time less restarting time and get things done faster.
Mark Joyner has several great prioritizing exercises in his Simpleology 101 course. The backward planner allows you to look at the whole picture and then break it down into bite sized tasks you can do one at a time. So its great to dream big but then you need a laser focused strategy to make it happen.

Three: Limit your hours of availability

Once again. Four simple words that can change your life TURN THE PHONE OFF. Control when people meet with you by phone the same way you would control meeting face to face. Create a schedule. People will get used to it.
If you need to have the phone answered 24/7 hire a customer service call center to do this or put a FAQ system on your website to cover the hours you are focused on your tasks at hand. Use auto responders to let people know when you will be available to answer emails and calls.

By limiting the use of cell phones, land lines email, IM and text messaging and other distractions you can stop the busy work and get something done in an hour or two a day and spend the rest of your time doing what you really want to do.

Four: Outsource

You may not be able to afford to outsource every task all at once but you can begin by using rentacoder, or elance to hire a virtual assistant a few hours a week and customer service call centers to start taking over tasks one by one. Figure out what you are good at and do that instead of learning to do each task that is a part of your business.
It really is OK to turn the phone off and hire a virtual assistant to screen most of your calls.
It is not a sin to answer emails once a day or once every two days or hire someone to look through them for you if you have a high volume of emails coming in each day.

Five: Limit information intake

There is so much information that we are drowning in it. Technology has made us chronically busy instead of freeing us up but there is an answer to this dilemma. Take control of your life and your time and how you spend your day.

Listen to constructive courses or relaxing music when you drive or wake up instead of news media. You may want to be involved but by allowing the media to bombard you with their idea of what is important you simply depress yourself by focusing on the catastrophes and sensationalized garbage that an unhealthy media decides are important. From now on YOU chose what goes into your mind.

Six: Stop living in “The Sea of Should”

Get over the work ethic, stop being frantically busy to prove your worthy. Stop caring what others think of you or your lifestyle.

We are taught that one must work hard and be very busy in order to be successful, be a good person and be respected. It is the work ethic. The idea of outsourcing and living your bliss does not appeal to most people. We are taught that we should want to do it all ourselves. What If you where to get to the point of not being busy and enjoying life? What would people think? They would probably feel resentful.

It’s time to get over that one. Often people stay busy so they don’t have to create meaning in their lives. We all know the stories about people who won the lottery and were worse off a year later. So decide what you really want and then eliminate distractions and get to it!

In summary:

1. Say no to doing it all: Use the 80/20
2. Never multi task: Focus your energy on one task at a time without interruptions
3. Limit your hours of availability: TURN OFF THE PHONE!
4. Outsource: Create a replicatable model for every task.
5. Limit information intake: Throw out the TV.
6. Get over the work ethic: Stop caring what others think of you.

You can find mark Joyner’s course and books at www.simpleology.com. Joyner made his fortune with online marketing books and sites, and retired to New Zealand in his 30’s.
Timothy Ferriss wrote The 4 Hour Workweek, Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere and Join the New Rich.

A very useful and informative training manual for under $40

Lose the hype and get the real scoop on making a living online from a young web designer who has been doing it for over 5 years now.

It is a joy to promote someone who has so much integrity and talent at such a young age.

At 23 Holly Mann is an inspiration. She is a self made internet guru who is humble enough not to call herself one. After an honorable discharge from the military Mann took her new born child to Thailand where she had been stationed in the past because she knew it was affordable. Mann set up shop selling internet hosting as an affiliate marketer.

If you go to her blog you will see photos of the new home she just bought for herself and her boy.

Mann’s book is a down to earth guide on getting started online. Mann is truly generous with her information because she became tired of seeing the “gurus” over charge for knowledge and decided she wanted to turn the tables by offering honest information at a reasonable price.

Network Marketing: Good or Evil?

So many people have abused this system of selling that it is mired in confusion and misinformation.

We will take a look at the good and bad aspects of this type of business model.

Mark Yarnell is at the top as a network marketer having sold his Nuskin business back in the 90’s. For network marketers his training videos are a godsend. He writes extensively on network marketing and is one of the formost experts on the subject.

Yarnell says a pyramid is the best system

It is the system that corporate America uses. He is right it is the same system they have been using for years and he is wrong it is not the best system. A Collaborative Model where everyone wins and has a place is even better. And that is what network marketing should be all about.

But often this is not the case. Many times people are drawn in by the carrot of great wealth and little work. This is a fallacy. Only five % make it to the top. And there is a lot of work and training that must go on just as with any business.

Telling people to go out and hit up friends and family and canvas the neighborhood is ridiculous. When you start a business you have to train and learn and put in some time at first. When I started my web design business I did not hit up my friends and family. I went to business people who needed web sites.

You don’t have to reach the top to play

There is nothing wrong with supplementing your income with a network marketing product. If you have a list of customers that already buy products in a specific niche why not offer the best products you can find no matter what the source? But to me the emphasis should be on serving your customers not on being a loyal clone to a network marketing company.

Network marketing companies seem to know little about other types of marketing like affiliate or online marketing to a niche market so they will put you down or will try to dissuade you from selling more than one line of products. Affiliate marketers can make passive income just by selling $100 a day from ten sites or sales pages. Once the sites are up they can automatically generate sales for years to come.

Sales takes a tough hide

Sales is a not an easy field, and not everyone wants to do it full time. And that is what it takes to reach the top in many network marketing companies. It takes guts to face the numerous rejections you must go through to find the right customers, and not everyone is natural at it but everyone can learn. It does a great disservice to tell people it is easy and that anyone can do it.

Some people are born sales people

I have known people who thrive on the challenge of meeting quotas and pushing themselves to talk to more and more people. But those people are rare. Most of us do sales because we have to. If you have ever gotten yourself hired for a job or If you run any kind of business, be it healing, or food preparation or cleaning you must know how sell to a certain extent. All of us have learned to sell ourselves and our services or we would not have survived this long.

The beauty of network marketing

The beauty of a good network marketing company is that you can start your business part time or incorporate the products into your present business and make extra income.

Another great perk is having access to people who want you to succeed and who have made a lot of money and know how to do it. This is not always the case with every network marketing company. But if you find one that has not reached critical mass you have a gem that is small enough that you can rub elbows with the owners of the company and the top earners.

If you are in a group that is motivated to truly help the world it can be very nice to be around these people and form a team or tribe but there can be drawbacks to all thinking alike and using the same jargon day in and day out…

The bad part about network marketing is the religious cult mentality

There is a disturbing cult like aspect to Network marketing companies at times. In order to fire up neophytes the training often encourages people to get really over-the-top excited and go out and “share” with everyone. This is unpleasant for the “sharies” and does not get the results that are needed.

Don’t say the word “SALES”!

People are encouraged to never use the S” word but if you are in a network marketing company you are in sales and why not be proud of it? This is a business and people are often encouraged to pretend like it isn’t and this is the wrong approach. Since the industry is dominated by women it has been marginalized and ridiculed. Well, it’s time to become serious business women (and the 20 percent who are men can get serious too!)

Treat your network marketing business with all the seriousness you would treat any other business. There is no need to be sneaky or ashamed of being a sales rep or consultant. People are not stupid and they will know you have the intention of selling them something so be forthright and honest at all times.

Your real estate agent, or car dealer or hairdresser don’t pretend to be simply “sharing” information or skills with you because they are your friend. They are there to provide a service with the end goal of being paid so they can continue to live in a money driven economy just like everyone else. Why should network marketers pretend they are not part of the same business world the rest of us are part of?

Hype smells like hype

You run out and tell everyone that your product is the best product! It is the only product! it will cure everything from autism to car trouble!

The hype and exaggeration and emoting that goes into the monthly speeches and pep rallies gets people going for a little while but like a suntan it fades. The day to day work of running a new business sets in and most people just give up at this point because they were not trained and warned that building a business of any kind is work. It can be fun and rewarding but it is going to have ups and downs.

When you have worked yourself into froth and put up signage on every street corner and stuck pamphlets in every car window within 100 miles and waited for random strangers to call you may grow tired and give up. Yes, maybe your upline got you to buy $2000 dollars worth of product that is now stored in your closet or garage but you become another casualty. Now they have to keep using up more and more people to amass their monthly quota. It is better to train for a business than to expect some miraculous pile of cash to fall in your lap without any effort.

The pork chop mentality

The problem with a lot of networkers is they see everything as a means to an end. Instead of getting to know people and find out if this would be a good business for them they see dollar signs on every person’s forehead. Every one becomes not just a human being to enjoy for who they are but a possible source of money in your pocket for many network marketers.

The answer to the madness?

Research the company thoroughly and make sure there are no skeletons in the closet

Try the products and make sure they really work

Access whether this is in alignment with your own life purpose or are you just drawn in by greed?

Once you find something you want to incorporate into your existing business or launch as a new business

Join networking groups and local chambers just like other businesses

Find pertinent trade shows, fairs and festivals

Present your products and business just like a real business

Join business groups and build relationships

RBN

BNI

Meetup.com

NAWB for women

Consider selling on line with affiliate marketing models and web 2.0 sites as another outlet

If you decide to cold call professionals in the right fields of business figure out who is in your market and treated this just like any sales rep would treat calling on a potential customer. Do not use hype and awe but respect and patience and dignity with a product that is relevant to that demographic.

If you do energy work or hypnosis there are many relaxation and mediation aids that have great affiliate programs. if you are a fitness instructor and you want to help people lose weight you can find natural herbal cleanses, ebooks on healthy diet and more to help people with the process. or you can write your knowledge down and sell it as an ebook on your own one page mini site that is easy to set up.

Did you know you can sell everything from a Sierra club hiking membership to bridal gowns to e-books at Linkshare.com without ever seeing the products?

Just by referring people from your site to the specific items that you trust and believe in companies are willing to pay you a percentage of what they earn. Using affiliate tracking software they are able to credit your account. They often supple banners, graphics and landing pages or you can simply write articles, pdf files, like my free Ebook Ten tools to Automate your Business, or newsletters informing people about the products.

There are hundreds of trusted, well known, name brands that will pay you a percentage to recommend their products on your site.

Through selling affiliate products that relate to your interest and developing your own e-book, service or seminar you can begin to create passive income without working a lot of hours.

The reason for my holistic niche is because I have a background in holistic health and I am a painter so I know that we are often tech-challenged and intimidated by the internet. In 2006 I decided to change that for myself and began to market my holistic knowledge on line as well as my art.

There is no reason to be bad at marketing just because you are a “creative type”

I was pleasantly surprised to find that there are lots of free and inexpensive resources for building your site, automating tasks and getting the information you need to be a successful online marketer.

The direction we should be taking in our businesses is toward selling online because that is where people are doing a lot of their research before they buy products or services. It does not matter what your business is you need an online presence to allow people to familiarize themselves with you and your company.

How do we shop for services?

How many times do you look online for a local service or vendor before you use the phone book? I don’t know about you but I figured out about 5 years ago that I could throw the phone book in the recycling bin and save myself a lot of space on the bookshelf by using Google instead. Not only did Google take up a lot less room than the phone book; it gave me vastly more choices and a lot more information on the businesses that I found.

We are information junkies we want more, more, more!

Surprisingly, although I am often able to find a phone number and address for a business there are still many businesses that do not have websites or more than a couple of lines of information. Sometimes this frustrates me because if it is the middle of the night I can’t call them! Gasp! I can’t get as much info as I would like if they don’t have a site or blog.

Even if most of your business is done one on one you should utilize a blog or a website to market and connect to people online. The reason you want to be online is that you can help and effect more people in a shorter amount of time. You can also automate various tasks and find or create products that relate to your business to sell on line and build some passive income for yourself.

So let’s get our creative butts in gear and modernize the way we do business!
